Description Of Courses & Activities

  • Academic Readiness:
Students will be trained in appropriate classroom behavior, with a focus on the roles of both teachers and students in the learning process. Instruction will emphasize cognitive skills, including literacy (letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and reading comprehension), numeracy (basic number recognition, counting, and understanding shapes), as well as the development of fine and gross motor skills.

  • Mathematics:
Students will undergo an initial assessment using the Autism Helper curriculum, which is tailored for individuals with autism and learning disabilities. Each student will progress at their own pace, with post-tests for each unit determining whether concepts require further training or mastery before advancing. Supplementary resources like CPALMS, Funny Daffer and Education.com will further strengthen math skills.

  • Reading:
Assessments will be given using k5learning and CORE to determine reading levels. The Autism Helper curriculum will be used at each determined level.  Pre-tests and post-tests will track progress across five reading levels, allowing for the identification of barriers. An individualized curriculum will ensure effective learning and mastery before advancing to the next unit.  Supported resources also utilized are Hooked on Phonics, Get Epic, Education.com and Funny Daffer to further increase reading skills in an engaging manner.

  • Writing:
Students will develop writing skills, focusing on letter formation, sentence construction, and grammar awareness through a gradual release approach from guided to independent practice. Additional materials will support fine motor development, with options for keyboard training and text-to-speech for those with fine motor challenges.

  • STEM:
Students will engage in diverse activities to explore scientific concepts through hands-on experiments and projects, promoting teamwork and practical learning.

  • Social Skills Development:
Students will develop social skills through targeted materials and environmental training. They will engage in peer collaboration and utilize resources such as Autism Helper, Education.com, and Emotional ABC’s, along with participation in school-organized social activities. Through exercises and role-playing, students will improve their understanding of social cues, build meaningful relationships, and enhance interpersonal interactions, all within a supportive environment that fosters confidence and social competence.

  • Life Skills and Independence:
The AFLS life skills assessment and curriculum will help students with autism and other developmental disabilities achieve greater independence. Individualized instruction will address identified skill gaps and strengths, fostering functional self-care and daily living skills. Training will be tailored to each student's abilities, promoting self-reliance and enhancing quality of life.

  • Sensory Integration and Regulation:
Students will learn to understand and manage their sensory processing challenges to promote emotional regulation. Personalized strategies will include activities like sensory bins and other tailored tools to build sensory tolerance. Students will also practice emotional regulation techniques, such as deep breathing and verbal expression, equipping them to manage sensory input effectively and express emotions constructively.

  • Behavior Management Strategies:
Students will develop effective behavior management techniques tailored to their individual needs, focusing on understanding behavior triggers and promoting constructive responses. Using resources such as Emotional ABC’s and social stories, students will learn proactive approaches to behavior management. Emphasis will be placed on communication skills, setting clear expectations, and reinforcing positive behaviors, equipping students with strategies to manage their behavior and communicate confidently.

  • Communication and Language Skills:
Students will be assessed using the criterion-referenced ABBLS assessment to determine language skill placement and identify areas of weakness for children with autism and other developmental disabilities. The Autism Helper curriculum, aligned with Common Core State Standards, will be utilized, alongside supplementary resources like CPALMS, Funny Daffer, and Education.com. This program aims to enhance both expressive and receptive language skills, fostering effective communication. Nonverbal communication and emergent language are also emphasized.
